SayPro CEO Neftaly Malatjie Urges NPOs to Stay Compliant with Tax, SARS, and UIF at Capacity Building Training Event

Johannesburg, South Africa – 25 June 2025
Nonprofit organizations must prioritize compliance with national regulations if they want to build sustainable and credible operations—this was the key message delivered by Neftaly Malatjie, CEO of SayPro (Southern Africa Youth Project), at the SayPro Capacity Building Training for NPOs Programme held at the Southern Africa Youth Project headquarters.
In his address to nonprofit professionals and community leaders, Malatjie stressed the importance of adhering to financial and legal obligations, including paying taxes, registering with the South African Revenue Service (SARS), and contributing to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).
“Make sure that your organization pays tax, SARS, and UIF,” Malatjie stated firmly. “It’s not just about compliance; it’s about building a reputation of accountability and trust with your stakeholders, including funders, partners, and the communities you serve.”
The SayPro Capacity Building Training for NPOs is a strategic initiative aimed at improving the operational effectiveness of nonprofit organizations in Southern Africa. The training provides NPO leaders and staff with practical knowledge in governance, financial management, legal compliance, and organizational development.
Malatjie highlighted a common issue faced by many small and emerging NPOs: neglecting regulatory obligations due to limited capacity or misunderstanding of their responsibilities. He warned that non-compliance with institutions such as SARS and the Department of Labour can result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and disqualification from key funding opportunities.
“Even if you’re a nonprofit, you are still a registered entity, and that comes with responsibilities,” Malatjie added. “You must register your staff for UIF, submit annual tax returns, and keep your affairs in order with SARS. These are non-negotiables for any serious organization.”
Throughout the event, nonprofit leaders took part in hands-on workshops focused on financial reporting, tax filing procedures, payroll compliance, and human resource management. The sessions were led by experts in nonprofit law and accounting, with the aim of demystifying complex regulatory frameworks.
Participants expressed gratitude for the clarity and practical advice offered during the event. One attendee remarked, “This training opened my eyes to how important it is to run our NPO like a business—accountable, professional, and fully compliant.”
Under Neftaly Malatjie’s leadership, SayPro has positioned itself as a leading force in nonprofit development and youth empowerment. The organization continues to advocate for professional standards across the nonprofit sector, believing that sustainable development starts with strong, compliant institutions.
The SayPro Capacity Building Programme will continue to roll out across various provinces, offering more organizations the opportunity to strengthen their systems and align with national standards.
