Speech by Neftaly Malatjie, CEO of SayPro
Department of Economic Development Conference on Innovation
Thatchfield, South Africa
15 May 2025
Honourable Ministers, distinguished guests, colleagues, and innovators,
Kgotso a ebe le lena
It is a profound honour to stand before you today at this pivotal gathering hosted by the Department of Economic Development. Innovation is not just a buzzword โ it is the lifeblood of our countryโs economic future and the catalyst for social transformation.
South Africa is at a crossroads. Our nation carries the hopes of millions โ especially our youth โ who aspire for meaningful opportunities, dignity, and prosperity. But to realise this promise, we must embrace innovation not as a luxury but as a necessity. Innovation unlocks potential where resources are limited; it creates jobs where unemployment looms large; it builds solutions tailored for the unique challenges of our communities.
At SayPro, we have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of innovation. Through our youth development programmes, we harness creative thinking, technology, and entrepreneurship to empower young South Africans. From digital skills training to social enterprise incubation, our approach is rooted in practical innovation that creates measurable impact.
But innovation cannot thrive in isolation. It requires collaboration โ between government, the private sector, academia, and civil society. It requires a shared vision and a willingness to invest in ideas, people, and infrastructure. Most importantly, it requires an unwavering commitment to inclusion, ensuring that innovation reaches all corners of our society, especially those historically marginalised.
As we reflect on todayโs discussions, let us commit to cultivating an ecosystem where innovators can dream boldly and execute brilliantly. Let us foster policies that support research and development, facilitate access to capital, and champion skills development.
To the young people of South Africa โ your creativity and resilience are our greatest assets. We must build bridges that turn your ideas into enterprises, your talents into industries, and your potential into prosperity.
In closing, innovation is more than technology or products โ it is a mindset, a culture of continuous improvement and problem-solving. Let us be the architects of a new South Africa โ one where innovation drives growth, inclusion, and shared success.
Thank you.
My message shall end here.
